The $500 check is directed to the Vitas Hospice Charitable Fund, which works on improving pain management, counseling and other aspects of end-of-life care for this area. It’s an important event to Vitas, as explained by Marco Islander Bernadette La Paglia, the community liaison for Vitas. “This event is truly a milestone because it sheds light on a little known aspect of the Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, that while it operates as a for-profit health care business, it does so with a hand-in-glove relationship with the Vitas Charitable Fund.”

  • Marco Historical Museum awaits replacement tiles for Arsenault wall
The people who spearheaded the Marco Island History Museum have labored mightily to get everything just right. The ceiling in the lecture hall has the look of a chickee hut thatch, even though it is actually a high tech PVC-type material better suited to modern fire codes and potential wind loads. The rough-hewn wooden beams fit the image of historical Florida from the time of the Calusa Indians. But the required steel connectors on the beams, visible from the hall, didn’t have the look the Historical Society wanted. So volunteers climbed up and wrapped 10,000 feet of hemp rope around the steel plates, to keep the “old Florida” feel of the building intact.

  • Marcophiles: Marco Players holding auditions for upcoming productions
Audition time! The Marco Players are holding auditions Monday and Tuesday, for their second production of the season, “Seascape,” a Pulitzer Prize winning play by Edward Albee. Players President Beverly Dahslrom says the cast includes two men and two women. One couple needs to be in age group 50s and 60s. The other couple can be any age. We’re guessing the 50-60-ish pair will play roles of people. The other two probably will be the sea creatures that come ashore for some human contact. We hear the amphibians, if that’s what they’re called, have an admirable command of the English language.
